CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and invited Hardik Pandya’s GT to bat first at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday (May 29). And the home side made full use of putting runs on the board in a pressure match.
Put into bat, GT openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha overcame the early moment from the CSK pacers, and stepped on the throttle to score at brisk pace. While in-form Gill departed after powerplay, Saha carried on and scored a 50.
Saha shared another stand with Sai Sudarshan, who went on to smash 96 off 47 balls as GT went on to register the highest total in IPL final history as they posted 214 for 4 in the allotted 20 overs.
This is the first time a team batting first has scored 200 or more in an IPL final. The previous best was posted by Punjab Kings in 2012, but they ended up on the losing team.
Now, MS Dhoni’s CSK will need to chase down the highest ever score in a IPL final to keep their dreams of a fifth title alive. But, what is the highest successful chase so far in the 15 editions and who holds the record?
Kolkata Knight Riders winners of the 2012 and 2014 edition are the current holders of the record for highest successful chase in IPL summit clashes. KKR first chased down 191 against CSK in 2012 and chased down 200 against Punjab Kings two years later.
In fact, there have been only 6 successful run chases in the 15 IPL finals so far. Only KKR, Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians and CSK have successfully chased down a score in an IPL final so far.
