India men’s football team return to action at the Intercontinental Cup in their preparations for the AFC Asia Cup later in the year. The Blue Tigers will kickstart their campaign against Mongolia in the first of round-robin matches at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

The other two participating nations are World No. 99 Lebanon and No. 164 Vanuatu. The two visiting nations already played the first match of the tournament earlier in the day at the same venue as Kalinga Stadium will host all the matches.

This is the third edition of the Hero Intercontinental Cup with hosts India winning the inaugural event in 2018 and was followed by North Korea winning it in 2019. The tournament wasn’t held ever since after COVID-19 made a mockery of the sporting calendar across the globe.

The third edition this year comes seven months before the Asia Cup and is played days before the SAFF Cup, to be held in Bengaluru. Coach Igor Stimac had his entire squad at his disposal for the tournament in Bhubaneswar as the likes of Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Sandesh Jhingan among several others featured in the squad.

India (ranked 101) and Lebanon are seen as the two favourites to reach the final as both the teams are the highest ranked teams in the tournament while India will aim to nullify the ranking superiority of the Middle East nation with the help of the home crowd.
