Novak Djokovic had little difficulty in dealing with Aleksandar Kovacevic in the opening round as he defeated the American in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). Fucsovics, on the other hand, defeated Hugo Grenier 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 at the latter’s home turf.
Djokovic came into the tournament struggling on clay as he lost to Holger Rune in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open last week but his win against Kovacevic gave him the much-needed time to get accustomed to the surface.
The 36-year-old tennis superstar was in complete control of the match while World No. 114 Kovacevic couldn’t serve a single ace against the former French Open champion, who broke him twice in the opening set. Kovacevic, however, did break Djokovic in the third set to enforce a tiebreaker.
Novak Djokovic made the tie-breaker his own by winning seven of the eight points to seal his place in the second round. World No. 73 Fucsovic is expected to be a far tougher challenger at the Court Philippe Chatrier on Wednesday as the Hungarian opponent will be looking to make the most of the distraction Djokovic caused by his message of ‘Kosovo is in the heart of Serbia’.
