The CCTV cameras worth millions of rupees (PKR) have reportedly been stolen from the iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Adding further insult to the cricket board, the batteries of generators installed for lighting the stadium were also stolen by thieves.
Pieces of equipment stolen from the stadium
The list doesn’t stop here, even the optic fibre cables used for the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other vital electronic equipment, reported to be worth more than Rs 10 lakh (Pakistani Rupees), have also been stolen from the venue.
As per ARY News, the authorities have lodged a complaint at the Gulberg police station after the shocking incident.
The incident puts the hosting of PSL 2023 matches at Gaddafi Stadium in jeopardy. A standoff between Pakistan Cricket Board and the interim government in Pakistan’s Punjab province has already been a significant concern in the smooth hosting of the league.
Tussle between PCB and interim Punjab government in Pakistan
The tussle between the interim Punjab province government and the board over the ‘security expenses’ of the league has put a question mark on the fate of upcoming games in Lahore and Rawalpindi.
As per reports, the total cost for installing security pieces of equipment and making other security arrangements for the smooth conduct of PSL matches stands around PKR 500 million. However, the provincial government is willing to pay not more than half of the amount i.e. PKR 250 million. The interim Punjab government has asked the PCB to bear 50 per cent of the security expenses.
What is the fate of PSL 8?
The board has maintained that providing security to the league is the government’s duty and therefore won’t bear any expenses.
If the standoff between the government and the board persists then the matches might be shifted to another venue which would result in a big loss to the PCB, believes former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja.
“PSL 8 not played in Lahore/Rawalpindi will be a big loss. It was based on the home and away concept. PSL played at only one city will kill the excitement of the tournament among fans,” the former Pakistan captain said.
Pakistan going through a crisis
Pakistan is going through an economic crisis and inflation in the country is at an all-time high ever since the Imran Khan-led PTI Government came off power in the country. This could be a reason why miscreants stole the electronic equipment installed at the stadium.
