WTC Final 2023: Rohit Sharma and experts call for three-Test showdown after heartbreaking loss

India have now lost back-to-back World Test Championships Final as they lost in 2021 to New Zealand in Birmingham. Rohit Sharma, who couldn’t fire big in both innings, felt that the WTC final would have been faired if the champion was decided over three matches.

“I would like to play the 3-Test match series for the WTC Final. We worked hard and we fought but we played just 1 game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle,” Rohit Sharma said in the post-match press conference.

Earlier Aakash Chopra echoed a similar sentiment on the opening day of the Test match as he found it hard to digest that ICC couldn’t find time for a three-match Test final for a tournament that spreads over two years.

“Find it really uncomfortable that you are okay to have a championship spread over two years…but can’t find time for a three-test series at the end of the 24-month cycle. While everybody claims that it’s the Ultimate Format, nobody has the time to give the respect it deserves,” he wrote on his Twitter profile.

“If you can’t accommodate three Tests, why bother with the finals at all? The team that has topped the table over 2 years should be given the mace…as it used to be the case earlier. In any case, there’s no uniformity in terms of how many Tests each series should have,” he added.

However, the calls for a three-match final are unlikely to happen anytime soon as a senior ICC official earlier said that the council is happy with the feedback for a one-off final.
